FreeSoft successfully completes a tool based application migration from Adabas/Natural to Java / Oracle

The Client is a governmental agency in South Africa that provides information systems and other related services to participating departments.  The prime contractor in the project was Bushfire Pty.
The Project

It was a R+D excercise of the Client, aiming Natural/ADABAS meta-model extraction, partitioning of monolithic meta-model for transformation pilot isolation purposes, transformation of the original ADABAS structure to Oracle. The scope of the project was the conversion of ADABAS data into the new Oracle database, and the transformation of Natural application components to Java. The new Java application runs against the Oracle database using Hibernate persistence layer technology.

Scope: Programs 15, subprograms 21,copycode 21, help routines 6, maps 38, DDMs 45, 75,000 lines of code

Solution

FreeSoft created the Oracle schema from ADABAS FDT's. It was done fully automatically by FreeSoft's A2O tool. The ADABAS export (ADADCU) files were converted to Oracle SQL*Loader input files. This task was performed by the A2O tool automatically too. The tool also generated the necessary control files for SQL*Loader. The created input files were further processed by Oracle SQL*Loader.

The Natural program were migrated with the N2J converter tool of FreeSoft. The MAPs were converted to JSP pages and the Natural programs to Java classes.

Advantages for the customer
  • Continued assurance of the investment in the application after the strategic change to 3-tier architecture with bundled web-based services
  • Automated conversion of source code through the usage of the FreeSoft converter.
  • Major step towards a modern, flexible service-oriented architecture.
